By a Black Woman, For Progressive Cycle Breakers
Uppity Negress was born from a simple, radical belief: healing is political.
I'm Kiki Bryant, writer, educator, and founder of Uppity Negress. Based in Chicago, Illinois, I created this space for Black women, progressive Black folks, and anyone committed to breaking cycles. This brand exists because I needed it to exist, and because I know you do too.
The Mission
Uppity Negress is a social-emotional learning and social justice resource hub built for Black communities and marginalized groups who are doing the deep, necessary work of healing and liberation. Every journal, e-book, and educational resource I create is designed with intention: to help you process, grow, and move through the world more fully as yourself.
I don't believe in healing that ignores systems. I don't believe in self-help that sidesteps social justice. Here, the personal and the political are always connected.
The Work
My flagship Decentering Whiteness series has reached thousands of with 236+ reviews from people doing the work alongside me. These aren't just books. They're tools for transformation.
From journals designed for reflection and self-discovery to e-books that challenge dominant narratives, everything in this shop is created to support your journey.. and meet you wherever you are.
The Community
Uppity Negress is more than a shop. It's a community of over 11,000 subscribers on Substack, a growing presence on social media, and a network of readers, thinkers, and cycle breakers who show up for each other.
We're building something together — a world where Black healing is centered, resourced, and celebrated.

Built on the belief that healing is political. Unapologetically.
