Decentering Whiteness is a reflective journal designed for white readers committed to dismantling the system they have inherited and often unconsciously upheld. Through in-depth prompts, practical exercises, and daily affirmations, this journal guides you to question assumptions, confront internalized patterns, and resist complicity in whiteness as the default.
Instead of offering easy comfort, these pages invite you into discomfort that produces growth. You will explore how whiteness has shaped history, language, beauty, community, and your own choices—and what it means to decenter it in your daily life.
This is not a workbook about guilt or shame. It is a practice of accountability, humility, and commitment. By the end, you will have not only imagined a future where whiteness is no longer the center but also pledged to participate in building it. The work begins here, and it continues with you.
Started going through this with two open and caring friends and we are all enjoying the analysis and discussion. Some of the pages and reading will be difficult - emotionally, and possibly intellectually - if you haven't wrestled with systemic racism and "default whiteness" before. I ruminate a lot, and read Uppity Negress already, so it isn't all new. But the reflections always offer something to really think about.

I can't even begin to describe how valuable this is. I have told all of my friends about it. I have worked to be intentional about getting my research, resources and information about racial issues from non white sources for awhile now because I fear that white resources while well intentioned could be tone deaf at best and actually harmful at worst and I would not even know, because I am white and have that built in bias, but this takes that to a whole new level and I know I can trust it because it was written by someone who is very aware of both sides, very capable in code switching and very capable of breaking it down in an easily executable fashion. Frankly the author should not have to even do this work, but the fact that she is so willing to, kind of blows my mind and I deeply appreciate ALL her work.

If you want a hands-on, direct and compassionate guide to commit to a practice of growth and transformation this an excellent resource. The workbook format is very accessible and invites reflection and honesty. The affirmation sections *literally give you scripts* that help reframe your internalized beliefs, practice new patterns, and put ideas of a more just culture into action. I appreciate having something I'll be able to keep returning to.

Very thought provoking. I appreciate the writing exercises that prompt me to look at ways I think and perceive that are 'second nature.' I really enjoy having my mind changed and the chance to notice my thought patterns and attitudes that I never realized were narrow focused or even harmful. Thanks for this workbook.

I am still working through the book. It takes a lot of reflection and serious thought to answer the questions on each page. It’s been so good for me. But I also feel like I’m kind of in a vacuum. I wish I was doing this with a group of people. I also have to live with the fact that while it’s doing some wonderful things for me and how I view the world and and my role in it, I also realized that I’m pissing off some of the people that live in my world with me. Because they’re tired of hearing about it. But that’s OK. They’re gonna keep hearing about it.
